‘Fantastic Beasts’ writer JK Rowling has teased some sequel details…

It may have only just debuted in cinemas across the UK, but we may have some idea where ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is heading in the upcoming sequel. At least, we now have some idea who will be in the sequel.

According to JK Rowling, Newt’s mysterious former love interest Leta Lestrange will be involved in ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’.

“Next movie,” she replied on Twitter when asked about Leta Lestrange.

But who is Leta Lestrange?

Introduced in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, she’s a young witch who Newt Scamander knew during his time at Hogwart’s. And it seems they may have had a bit of a romantic backstory. A relative of the evil Bellatrix Lestrange from ‘Harry Potter’, Leta appears on screen very briefly in a picture Newt carries with him on his travels, played by Zoe Kravitz.

And it looks as though this won’t be the last we’ve seen of her. After all, ‘Fantastic Beasts’ director Davis Yates has already revealed that she’ll be making an appearance in the upcoming sequels.

“Yes. Leta Lestrange comes into the second movie,” he told Cinema Blend. “She’s quite complicated and damaged and confused and Newt is absolutely still in love with her, so she has a kind of power over him, and she, yeah, she’s a kind of tragic figure, so we will see a bit more of her in the second movie.” Will Newt become entangled with Leta Lestrange once more?

The other sequel detail was plucked from Rowling when a large plot hole in the film puzzled Potter fans.

How does Newt still have his wand?

Throughout the Harry Potter books, it’s explained that wizards and witches who are expelled have their wands broken so they cannot perform magic, essentially rendering them powerless. But while Newt Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts, he’s obviously kept his wand. So why is this?

Twitter user, Clara Simmons, confronted JK Rowling to find out.

“Why was Newt allowed to keep his wand and do magic, and work for the ministry? Hagrid had a different experience after expulsion.”

To which Rowling replied, “All will become clear,” she explained. “Trust me” assuring the fans that it will be covered later in the series… and it sounds as though it could all be part of her plan for the film franchise.

It’s already hinted that Newt Scamander was a ‘favourite’ of Albus Dumbledore… and while he was only a teacher at Hogwarts during this time, it’s likely that he used his influence to help the young wizard.

For now, we will have to wait and see…

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ debuted on 18 November 2016.
